The APA Zodiac is a celebration of hybrid identities. There are 12 animal signs in the Chinese Zodiac and 5 elements that shape who we are. Each astrological animal is mapped with elements of landscapes of the Americas, paying homage to the intricacies of heritage and who we are.
Inspired by stories and conversations with my Taiwanese mother about our family's history, our immigration, our struggles with colonization and assimilation, and our future.
This is the Metal Rat + Chicago skyline.
2020 is the Year of the Metal Rat. The Rat is the first sign in the Chinese Zodiac. New decades are always years of Metal, so this year is particularly special. Midnight is the Hour of Rat. The Rat represents the start of new cycles.
The words "metal" and "mettle" used to be inseparable, and meant quite literally, "the stuff one is made of." Substance. Courage. Enterprise. Morality.
I created this design as a reflection of whom we want to be. Our civilization is urbanizing at an ever-faster pace. As much as we're at the start of many new things, we're also running out of time on climate change. Midnight is the starting hour. 0:00 is also the end of time.
In my drawing, the Rat's face and surroundings reflect water, which is the Rat's native element in the Chinese Zodiac. Metal and water reflect each other. Everything we build, we must do with foresight for the world we want to become.
Open Edition, Giclee Print
Giclee Print on Archival Paper for the lifelong collector.
8 x 10 inch print.
