The AAPI (Asian Pacific Islander American) Zodiac explores hybrid identities, inspired by conversations with my Taiwanese mother. In the Chinese Zodiac, there are 12 animals and 5 elements that shape individuals’ identities. I reimagined the Zodiac animals as if they were informed by diaspora and landscapes of Turtle Island / North America.
This is the Golden Metal Monkey.
According to the Chinese Zodiac, who you become is determined by the intersection of the animals and elements that represent your birth year, month, and hour.
August is the Month of the Golden Metal Monkey. People born in 1980 and 1920 (after the lunar new year) are Metal Monkeys. The Hours of Monkey are 15:00 to 17:00.
The Metal Monkey Month is also the Leo Month in the Western Zodiac, so what better animal to represent than the Golden Lion Tamarin? And for a little extra pomp for all my Leo / Virgo / gold monkey friends, this is the first of the Zodiac animals to have an in-color edition.
