AAPI Zodiac: Fire Snake, Archival Print
This is the Fire Snake depicted as a boa constrictor who lives across both North and South American continents, intertwined with its burning habitat. The wildfire is simultaneously a necessary, integral part of nature, and one of the most devastating results of climate change. The more the fire is repressed, the more powerful and deadly it becomes. Fire like this creates crisis conditions. It destroys at a rate that outpaces the current ecosystem’s ability to recover and humanity’s capacity to rebuild.
--The AAPI (Asian Pacific Islander American) Zodiac explores hybrid identities, inspired by conversations with my Taiwanese mother. In the Chinese Zodiac, there are 12 animals and 5 elements that shape individuals’ identities. I reimagined the Zodiac animals as if they were informed by diaspora and landscapes of Turtle Island / North America.
