Asian Diasporic Zodiac: Fire Ox Archival Print
The Fire Ox is a part of my Asian Diasporic Zodiac, in which I reimagine the Zodiac animals as if they were informed by diaspora and the landscapes of Turtle Island / North America. This series is inspired by conversations with my Taiwanese mother.
The Fire Ox contains yin fire and yin earth, like the controlled prescribed burn of fire that generates new earth. Resilient but also tempestuous, water and winter bring balance for this sign.
Made in the image of the Sleeping Buffalo (Tunnel Mountain) trail, which gave me stunning views of this landscape, and of smoke rising from the mountains from nearby prescribed burns.
Completed during my time at the Banff Centre’s Leighton Artist Studio residency.
