Asian Diasporic Zodiac: Earth Rabbit Archival Print
The Earth Rabbit is a part of my Asian Diasporic Zodiac, in which I reimagine the Zodiac animals as if they were informed by diaspora and the landscapes of Turtle Island / North America. This series is inspired by conversations with my Taiwanese mother.
For this Earth Rabbit, I am taking inspiration from the snowy mountains, from the soil that is strong enough to protect the roots of a thriving forest yet gentle enough to nurture life. I am thinking about my Amah (who is an Earth Rabbit) and maternal relatives who left Taiwan, their homeland of several centuries and a landscape so very different from where they landed in the United States. Yet despite the harsh disparities, they created new life.
Completed during my time at the Banff Centre’s Leighton Artist Studio residency.
