🌳🪵2025 is the Year of the Wood Snake. 🪵🌳

The Wood Snake is a part of my Asian Diasporic Zodiac, in which I reimagine the Zodiac animals as if they were informed by diaspora and the landscapes of Turtle Island / North America. This series is inspired by conversations with my Taiwanese mother.

Snakes harbor the power of transformation. They shed old ways in the process of self-renewal. At the same time, [yin] wood offers stability, like roots. Revolutionary work often calls for the dismantling of old systems—and it also calls for the creation of new, more generous ecosystems in their place. 

We are witnessing empires die, and oppressors portraying themselves as victims to justify their violence. The irony of colonialism is that after it has stolen and consumed everything, it consumes itself, burning down whole systems in the name of patriotism, without any real vision for what a sense of nationhood is supposed to serve.

This Wood Snake is a Copperhead, moving across the growth rings of a black willow tree. A pit viper that moves silently, a tree known for its flexibility, each transitioning seamlessly between watery marshes and wooded lands.
