The AAPI (Asian Pacific Islander American) Zodiac explores hybrid identities, inspired by conversations with my Taiwanese mother. In the Chinese Zodiac, there are 12 animals and 5 elements that shape individuals’ identities. I reimagined the Zodiac animals as if they were informed by diaspora and landscapes of Turtle Island / North America.
This is the Metal Rooster. Confident, charismatic, industrious, and a bit of a showboat. The Metal Rooster bears the colors and features of copper, feldspar, and quartz, precious metals and minerals that are mined in the US. These materials are integral to daily, modern life, from the copper in our electrical wiring and plumbing to the quartz and feldspar needed in the making of glass and ceramics.
According to the Chinese Zodiac, who you become is determined by the intersection of the animals and elements that represent your birth year, month, and hour.
