The Metal Rabbit is a part of my Asian Diasporic Zodiac, in which I reimagine the Zodiac animals as if they were informed by diaspora and the landscapes of Turtle Island / North America. This series is inspired by conversations with my Taiwanese mother.

Drawn for the 17th anniversary of my father’s death.

When my dad was in his teens, in the years that the schools were shut down during the Cultural Revolution, he had a beloved pet rabbit with silvery blue fur named Fifth, whom his family considered the "fifth" child of their household.

I drew this Metal Rabbit referencing the dozen-ish books I read while in the mountains during my residency at Banff Centre: an ancient bronze ritualistic table from the Shanxi province (where my paternal ancestors are from), a Chinoiserie lamp, the engraved metal and polished wood of a revolver.

The Metal Rabbit is the fifth of five drawings I created during my time in the Leighton Artist Studios at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. It is the fifth rabbit I have completed (and 25th of 60 drawings) for my ongoing Asian Diasporic Zodiac series.
